If you now or have ever worked for any decent size company, I’m sure you have participated in or may now be participating in some form of strategic planning. Such an activity starts with what’s known as a SWAT analysis, an evaluation of one’s strengths, weaknesses, advantages and threats, then a series of goals and objectives are developed, and then a series of tactics are developed to accomplish the company’s objectives over the next year or two.
This kind of activity is as common as brushing and flossing your teeth. But there’s one big difference; the later processes are useful and the former isn’t. For many of you, just the saying of that would seem ludicrous. After all, doesn’t one need to do a competitive analysis and plan how one’s going to get from where one is to where one wants to be? Actually no. It’s totally counterproductive.
Here’s why. Whether realized or not, and usually not, such an activity is fundamentally fear-based. In other words, those participating in the process are unwilling to trust the Universe to beautifully orchestrate everything that needs to happen for the company’s hopes, dreams and objectives to become a reality and they mistakenly fear that if they don’t plan, nothing will happen. And anything grounded in fear will never produce a happy outcome.
You might now be saying, “trust the Universe to beautifully orchestrate everything?” What kind of gibberish is that? Well, let’s remember the Einstein quote I mentioned a couple of weeks ago: “The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or a hostile universe.” So decide. If you hopefully decide to believe that we live in a friendly universe, then you should be able to trust the universe and have faith that it will deliver. So we take our goals, objectives and intentions, plant them with our thoughts in the fertile soil of the universe, we water them with faith, trust, excitement and enthusiasm, and then we step back and watch the universe do its thing.
We realize that it’s a fools game to pit our finite intelligence against the universe’s infinite intelligence. Everything in the physical universe is truly pre-programmed to thrive. That is a fact. Just like a farmer plants his seeds and trusts they will germinate and produce a crop, we trust that we will be shown what actions we need to take, without much or any planning. Instead, we pay attention, trust our intuition, and take whatever actions we feel peaceful about and compelled to take.
If this is for you dramatically different than anything you have ever done in your company, you really need to give our approach a try. You can struggle and effort and try to manipulate the universe, which will likely leave you exhausted and disappointed, or you can turn your boat in the direction of the river and enjoy the downstream ride. And have fun all the way to the bank. If you want some help in implementing this, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
