In spite of the fact that coaching in business has become extremely popular, it remains a fact that the reason and purpose of having a coach is still a bit of a mystery to most business people, with the result being that they don’t take advantage of what coaching has to offer. So let me explain.
While we don’t much realize that this is the case, we generally assume that knowledge is divided into two categories; what we know and what we don’t know. In the first category is the large list of things we are knowledgeable about and it’s good to know these things because we can use what you know to take action and produce results.
The second category is likely larger than the first as there is so much we know we don’t know. I, for example, don’t know anything about rocket science, brain surgery, how to build or program a computer, how my cell phone works and on and on. When we discover something we don’t know that we want to know about, we’re usually quite effective in searching out the information to move it from the category of what we don’t know into the category of what we know so we can use it to produce results.
But here’s where the problem arises. We don’t realize that there’s a third category of knowledge, what we don’t know we don’t know. In other words, it’s just not we don’t know something, we don’t even realize that the something even exits. These are our blind spots and the fact that there is so much we don’t see, because we don’t even know it exists, is what limits our potential in so many areas of life.
So now, what is coaching? Here’s my simple definition of a coach: someone who helps you see what you now can’t see, the seeing of which will make a difference. And if you understand this, you can begin to appreciate why anyone interested in performing at the highest level in their chosen field wants to have a coach.
So coaching is not about telling you what to do. Any good coach lets you make your own decisions. The job of the coach is to make sure you see everything you need to see so that you make the best decisions for yourself. A good coach so opens your eyes that you see an opening into which you can take effective action and you have the freedom to step into the opening.
If you want a demonstration of how that works, call anytime for a free, one hour, coaching session on any business related topic.
