The Power of Beliefs

Are you clear about what you believe? Do you understand what motivates you to take the actions you take and do the things you do? Are you satisfied with the results you are presently producing?

I ask these questions because there is a definite cause and effect relationship between your beliefs and your results. Stated simply, but accurately, your beliefs determine your thoughts and emotions, those determine your actions and your actions determine your results. So in the world of cause and effect, beliefs are cause and results are the effects.

So speaking about beliefs, it becomes appropriate to point to what Albert Einstein, arguably the most brilliant man of the last century, had to say on the subject. He said “The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or a hostile universe.” Notice his statement is about what we believe. Now if you look at his statement and ask yourself: “OK, what do I believe?” I am sure you will say you believe you live in a friendly universe. The trouble is that’s not true. If you really told the truth, you would see how much you believe in a hostile universe and that is the source of all the challenges you face in your life and business.

What most people either do not understand or are not willing to acknowledge is that we live in an ego dominated world. As Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, explains in his other book, Outwitting the Devil, the ego dominates the thinking of 98% of all people. And what is the ego. It is the voice of fear. Deepak Chopra defines the ego as “the part of your mind that believes you are separate and alone in a hostile universe.” Notice the use of the word “hostile.” What the vast majority of you do not understand is how much you are driven by the fear-based, hostile universe believing voice of the ego.

Here’s an example that always cracks me up that I am sure you can relate to. I’ll be giving a speech or conducting a workshop and going into great detail about how the ego dominates our thinking, how much we live in fear, how unwilling we are to believe we live in a friendly universe, how frantic we generally are, and how much we simply are not willing to trust the universe to be on our side and have faith that things will all work out just fine because the universe is indeed our friend and it has our back. Then it’s time for a break and everyone runs out of the room, turns on their cell phone and either checks their messages or calls the office to see what’s going on. That’s if they are still in the room at the break because others have left their phone on vibrate and ran out in the middle of a session to check the message.

You know you do this. You know you are constantly checking to see how things are going wherever you are. Almost everyone does this and the reason is so obvious and simple. We live in fear. There is this unpredictable, untrustworthy universe out there that we have to constantly be on guard to defend against. So few are willing to believe we live in a friendly universe. But the sad reality is that the 2% that does believe this are the ones who are producing the most amazing results. I will say more about this in the next post. For now …
